Each fall, people from all parts of Missouri flow to the center of the state, to attend Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival in Columbia. In 2015, Intersection on KBIA did something different with the festival coverage. In addition to the usual stuff, like interviews with musicians and people who know a lot about local music, we also went out and chatted with festival goers about their experience at the festival and their memories about their first concerts.
We chose our central question "what was your first concert?" for a number of reasons. It is a very social (everyone has an answer) and very specific (everyone knows what to say) question, it calls for good stories, it is appropriate to the occasion, and it is a good conversation starter.
In addition to the audio clips, I also took some pictures of those who talked with us. I compiled a Humans of New York style album, and it performed very well on social media, especially on Facebook.
Some of the people who we talked with liked our page after this event, and now they still come back and engage with our content on social media.
Our audio interview was also fun to hear (Click here to listen). Overall, this was a successful engagement project.
